Today Superintendent Carole Smith, Mayor Adams and TriMet General Manager Neil McFarlane announced an agreement to keep the Youth Pass program in place for the full school year.

Students who qualify may apply at http://www.hmccoregon.com/scholarships/

The University of Oregon held an application workshop for DUCKExpress with 17 Benson students on Nov. 14th, 2011. Representative, Jessica Laux will return in January with admission decisions. She was very impressed with the number of students who participated. She shared that DUCKEpress at Benson has been her best event!

All students who complete their Oregon State University admissions application by Dec. 7th, 2011 can then sign up for our first ever @BeaverVIP. @BeaverVIP will bring representative Matt Ogawa to Benson. He will meet with prespective students, review their completed applications, and rendor an admission decision on the spot! You may even win some Beaver swag! Students must sign up in the counseling office to participate where they will receive a check list and important information. Log into http://oregonstate.edu/admissions/ to apply now.

5 Benson students have been selected to move into phase II of the ACT Six Scholarship competition. http://www.actsix.org/ TheAct Six Leadership and Scholarship Initiative is the Northwest’s only full-tuition, full-need scholarship for emerging urban and community leaders who want to use their college education to make a difference on campus and in their communities at home. Congratulations to Joshua Cha, Adam Daniel, Roote Gebremariam, Alexander Jones, and Austin Schroeder. They will compete in the next phase on Dec. 3rd, 2011 during a group interview. Good Luck Benson Seniors!

This is different from other schools in PPS. Benson students get a day off of school during the Tech Show and these 2 half days make up for that. Conferences are 1-3pm and 5-8 pm on 11/21 and 11/22.  Teachers will be at individual tables to afford more privacy.  Library will be open Monday night to help people with Edbox access.  A flyer with tips on ways to get the most out of your teacher conference was handed out. Conferences are not only the teacher telling you about your student’s performance but also a time for you to tell the teacher how they can best help your student to be successful. If you don’t have enough time during conferences to speak to a teacher, you have the option to schedule a private meeting at a later date.

An ID policy was implemented recently as a safety issue. Lanyards to carry student ID have been distributed. This ID policy is to make sure students in the building are Benson students. Incentives for compliance are weekly drawings for prizes such as an Ipod, gift certificates, nike products for students who have their ID displayed. She is pleased with the response of the students.

Eight Benson staff members on the equity team will be participating in a program entitled “Courageous conversations about Race”.

Staff are participating in professional learning communities which are small groups designed to share best teaching practices.

Principal Campbell would like parent feedback on the newsletters, conferences or any other issues parents have. Please send her an email and she will try to get back to you in 48 hours.  ccampbell@pps.net. She is promoting more two way communication between parents and staff. Teachers are supposed to return emails or phone calls in 48 hours. Email is preferred. If you are not getting a response, feel free to cc Principal Campbell when you send a second email to a teacher.

$18,000 in academic recovery funds was awarded to Benson which is earmarked to help students in credit recovery, after school tutoring and parent engagement.

Site council is working on Benson’s 5 year plan.

Principal Campbell is very open to meeting with Benson parents out in the community. A meeting at a church, home, coffee shop  etc. would be welcome.  If you are interested in this, please contact her.
